Completing a task

White Balance

The task today was to shoot inside a large building at a variety of stations with different  blends of lighting conditions and take identically framed shots with different white balances. Being 1) Auto: 2) Daylight: 3) Custom (using white card): 4) Custom (using expo disc)
 5) :Custom using a colour meter reading;

As my camera was unable to manually dial in a colour temp from the colour meter reading, I had to forego that pleasure

Clearly there are many ways to achieve a better/correct white balance, but custom white balance that uses the key light seems to render a more accurate result. 

Lens choice testing and distortion

The workshop today was to observe lens distortion..Pin cushion-Barrel- etc on a given lens at two different focal lengths

I chose to use my 24-70L at 24 and 70mm

We were required to take a shot of a given test target on the wall for each of the lens's main f-stops> in this case f2.8-f22

As I was using an L series lens the distortion (if any) is almost academic as I am not able to discern much if any distortion.    

Large format cameras

Today we had demonstrated the use and features of a large format film camera. In particular it was explained the functions and usefulness of the camera's ability to tilt and shift to change the focal plane closer to that of the subject that is being shot.


Features:

• High quality images
• DOF, image shape and  perspective control depending on tilt shift position

Lens Movements:
Tilt, shift and swing.


These movements allow amongst other thing the cameras focal plane to get closer to the field of focus required without compromising the angle shot, or having to move the camera. As light travels in straight lines it doesnt matter what angle the lens is at so long as the capture plane is positioned according to the desired position angle. This is also achieved by having a lens larger than normally required so that the tilted shifted image does not get cropped.

The Scheimpflug Principle

is the  principle which describes how to create a greater depth of field by adjusting the camera using tilt shift and swing.
